Feds to investigate Ford SUV transmission problem

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said it will start a formal investigation into transmission problems with two sport-utility vehicles manufactured by Ford Inc.

The problem focuses on the Ford Explorer and the Mercury Mountaineer. Numerous reports show that these SUVs have unexpectedly slipped out of park.

One woman claims to be a paraplegic because her Explorer slipped from Park into Reverse, driving over her.

The investigation began on April 21 and will focus mostly on vehicles manufactured between 2002 and 2005, about 1.4 million. Federal investigators have received 11 reports of the SUVs shifting on their own and rolling away. At least 61 other reports show a failure shifting to and from Park.

Ford has defended the vehicles despite the mounting evidence.
