Crane owner indicted on manslaughter charges

The owner of the crane which collapsed in March 2008 at a New York City construction site has been indicted on manslaughter and related charges.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said William Rapetti was “reckless and negligent” with his rigging practices on the crane which collapsed and killed seven people last year.

Rapetti’s lawyer defended his client in front of charges of second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment and assault. He called Rapetti a “patriot” who operated the largest crane in the world for free to look for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on that city.

When the 21-story crane collapsed, it did so across 51st St. in New York’s East Side. The crane cut into one building and ripped terraces from another.

Five of Rapetti’s friends were among those who died in the accident. A tourist was also killed. Two dozen others were injured in the accident.

Evidence shows Rapetti did not use enough support when trying to raise a huge piece of steel up a crane at the city construction site. Rather than using six specifically designed slings, Rapetti used four. The accident is being called avoidable had Rapetti taken proper safety precautions.
